There were already more than 20 stores selling jewelry in Schenectady in 1946. The prospects for Nathan Weiss were not good. He opened The Gem Center, a small shop on the third floor and invited people to come upstairs and “watch while you wait.” The Gem Center may no longer be there, but Weiss’ jewelry business, known as Glennpeter Jewelers since 1976, has grown into a Capital Region institution....
