LAKE GEORGE — A Niskayuna man was found safe after he was reported missing on a hiking trail in the Adirondacks over the weekend, according to state conservation officers.

Pavel Shamara, 33, was reported missing Sunday evening by family members, according to Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman David Winchell. Shamara had gone on a hike on Tongue Mountain earlier in the day, and rangers found his vehicle in the trailhead parking lot.

"Three forest rangers began a search of the trail system [Sunday night] to no avail," Winchell said. "At 4 a.m., searchers regrouped and began making assignments for the morning search with nine additional forest rangers."

He said the search ended about 8:30 a.m. toay when Shamara walked up to a member of the search party on the trail from Clay Meadows in Bolton.

"He was cold and tired but able to walk out to the trailhead without assistance, where he was turned over to the Bolton Emergency Squad," Winchell said. "Mr. Shamara reports that he had taken the wrong trail during a snowstorm. He broke into a private camp on Lake George to stay warm through the night."

Forest rangers were checking the camp Monday to make sure it was secure, and they were going to contact the land owners to make them aware of the incident.
