Here are the top visual arts recommendations, listed chronologically, for summer as chosen by Gazette visual arts writer Karen Bjornland:

“Ballston Rocks” in Ballston Spa — For summer strolling and family fun, there’s “Ballston Rocks.” Professional and amateur artists decorated 100 Adirondack-style rocking chairs, which are now are set up outdoors all over Ballston Spa. Pick up a map and go on a treasure hunt. The chairs hang around until Sept. 1.

72nd annual Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region and “Impressionist Giverny: American Painters in France at Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany — Renowned American sculptor Joel Shapiro is the juror for the 72nd annual Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region, which is back at the Institute on June 19. Less than two weeks after the regional closes, on Aug. 23, we’ll see “Impressionist Giverny: American painters in France, 1885-1915,” an exhibit of 40 paintings that was presented last year at the Musee d’Americain in Giverny, France.

Like Breath on Glass: Whistler, Inness and the Art of Painting Softly” at Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass. — This is the Berkshires blockbuster show this summer. The exhibit of 40 paintings investigates the brushwork of American artists in the early 1900s. The Clark also unveils the first phase of its expansion with the opening of Stone Hill Center, where visitors will find galleries and an outdoor café. Opening June 22.

“Winslow Homer Watercolors at The Arkell Museum, Canajoharie — The new museum’s renowned collection of Winslow Homer paintings has traveled the world. Now, it’s our turn to see a real first-class exhibit of these jewels. “Winslow Homer Watercolors” is appearing with a traveling show of paintings by Jamie, Andrew and N.C. Wyeth. Opening July 26.
